Architectural Signage

          Signs

Erickson Monuments produces and installs stone signs that are long-lasting, virtually maintenance-free, and have an appearance of stability and integrity that distinguishes stone signs from the usual man-made materials. An Erickson sign made of enduring stone for business park, church, school, housing subdivision, police stations, or other special place eloquently conveys permanence and prestige.

Erickson Monuments has the technology and expertise needed to work with you on any type of stone signage. Granite, marble, limestone, sandstone, even concrete can be tooled and inscribed to create a custom sign. We can provide and install metal letters and custom logos for your sign or building. Bronze plaques are also available from Erickson’s.

Erickson Monuments can handle the entire project, including providing the stone, designing and installing, we can do only the sandblasting based on your design and your stone, or a mix of your talent and our technology. We are ready to serve you with skills and reliability we have acquired since our family business began in 1925.

Natural stone can be tooled into versatile shapes and is ideally suited for custom-designed graphics and lettering. Erickson Monuments has advice on font choice and size of lettering when distance and vehicular speed are factors in legibility and readability.

Erickson Monuments can also assist with getting utility lines located for safe excavation of foundations, obtaining sign permits from various municipalities, and other factors involved with sign placement.

GOLF COURSE HOLE LAYOUT, YARDAGE MARKERS, AND BENCHES
Erickson Monuments produces hole layout graphics and yardage markers on stone to give your golf course tee boxes the look of prestige and substance that your golf club members will value. The markers are legible, colorful, and weather-resistant. Granite or flagstone are popular materials.

A way of funding the markers to offer the opportunity to members to sponsor a marker as a way of honoring someone for whom the golf course was memorable or as an advertising medium for a local business. The message or logo can be inscribed tastefully on the marker without interfering with the legibility of the hole layout or yardage information. Club members appreciate having stone benches throughout the course, again, either provided by the club or sponsored by families and businesses.

          Sundials

Erickson Monuments has installed equatorial sundials throughout North America.  Equatorial sundials are not the small garden-type sundials that are usually accurate only on a few days of the year.  The equatorial sundial is based on the relationship among the site where it is installed, the equator, and the North Star.  The “dial,” which is the large upright stone plate, is parallel to the equator.  The “gnomon” is the large stainless steel rod that pierces the dial and points to the North Star.  The two “analemmas” are the lettered stone charts that illustrate how to convert solar time into the standard or daylight savings time for the location of the sundial.  One analemma is for the “summer side” of the sundial (March 22 to September 21), and the other is for the “winter side” (September 22 to March 21).  The angle of the calibrated dials in relationship to the base and the placement of the gnomon determine the accuracy of the sundial.

The recording of time is based on an average of the earth’s yearly journey around the sun and its own daily rotation.  Because the earth’s elliptical path causes a daily variable relationship, solar time must be corrected to “clock” time, the charting of which is shown on the analemmas.

Very large and beautiful, the Erickson sundials are accurate, much to the surprise and delight of the beholder, who may be expecting only an approximation of the time, as is customary with garden sundials.

The base can designed in many shapes and finishes.  You may wish to have a landscaped or garden effect, an architectural theme, a focal point of a large plaza, or the like.  The base is a minimum of 7 feet by 15 feet, or up to any size you wish.  We furnish the plans for actual measurements required for the sundial and its parts.

A stone plaque can be lettered with local historical data or whatever information you wish.  The plaque can also serve as a secure cover for a “time capsule” to be opened in the future.

Complete plans for your specific site and instructions for the sundial installation will be provided.  The setting can be done accurately using standard construction tools, methods, and materials.  A foreman can study the specifications and easily direct the total setting.

Even though a sundial tells time only when the sun shines, an Erickson Equatorial Sundial is so interesting and beautiful in shape and concept that it is attractive at all times.  If floodlit at night, people will stop to admire and study it and come back the next day to check it in the sunlight.  Practically indestructible, this is an ideal public sculpture that has beauty, uniqueness, practical purpose, and attraction to people of all ages that will view it over and over again through the years.
